  3.     DIED. Andreas Hillgruber, 64, West German historian whose
  4. controversial interpretation of the Nazi mass murder of Jews
  5. touched off a heated debate about the meaning of the Holocaust; of
  6. throat cancer; on May 8 in Cologne. In his 1986 book Two Kinds of
  7. Destruction: The Shattering of the German Reich and the End of
  8. European Jewry, Hillgruber argued that the Nazi extermination
  9. program, while atrocious, was not historically unique. Hillgruber
  10. also justified the last stand of Hitler's army against the
  11. approaching Soviets, claiming that it allowed civilians to escape
  12. the "revenge organs of the Red Army."
